Summary
Common Names: American Ghost Shrimp, Glass Shrimp
Scientific Name: Palaemonetes paludosus
Availability in the UK: I bought mine from a 'Pets at Home' outlet but I haven't seen them offered anywhere else.
Feeding: Anything edible. Mine spends most of it's time searching around the substrate looking for morsels of uneaten food - I have several algae covered rocks that my other shrimps like to graze on but I've never observed my glass shrimp eating algae.
Imcompitible Shrimp: American Ghost Shrimp should be fine with most other adult shrimps but be careful of overcrowding.
Overview: Very active shrimp which stays on the move all day long. Enjoys swimming and even comes to the surface (upside down) when flake food is added to the tank. Seems quite territorial and is a fascinating addition to any shrimp tank.
Sexing: The adult female has a distinctive green Saddle.
Breeding: Easy to breed. Larval planktonic stage only lasts a few days before they metamorphose into baby shrimps. All done in freshwater, no brackish water necessary.
